South Social Film Festival is a movie & dining experience celebrating independent world cinema. First launched in September 2015, South Social dedicates every edition to a different country, turning into a platform to celebrate diversity through art, cinema, world music and food. This edition will bring the fantastic cuisine of chef Tokunbo Koiki, www.tokunboskitchen.com, born in the UK to Nigerian parents. Having run a street food stall and private chef service in the past, Tokumbo has a supper club, cooking authentic Nigerian cuisine. Guests can expect her signature West African delicacies such as Spicy Green Chilli and Onion Stew, Jollof Rice, Akara (bean fritters) and Beef & Tomato vegetable stew.
Mali Blues: An enchanting film, Mali Blues by Lutz Gregor presents the roots of the blues in Africa. The protagonist is Fatoumata Diawara, the beautiful Malian singer/musician that illustrates Mali’s rich musical culture. We travel through breath-taking landscapes and discover Mali’s agitated heart from Bamako in the Southwest to the “Festival au Désert“ in northern Timbuktu.
The screening will be presented and then followed by a jam session with world class musicians that have performed in previous South Social sessions such as Sirikushkumar Manji- Indian tabla player, MIRI- British songwriter, Peyman Heydarian- Persian Santur player, J'R' Joseph- rapper, Susana Silva - Portuguese singer and London Klezmer trio to name a few.
Created and founded by Italian film journalist, Paola Melli, South Social meets the World series received rave reviews and nurtured a loyal clientele of film and food enthusiasts. The festival is now ready to expand and the funds raised by crowdfunding will allow sustainability and improve the overall quality of the events.
